Drama, Adventure
Director and story: Tomm Moore
Co-director: Nora Twomey
Cast: Brendan Gleeson, Evan Mcguire, Mick Lally and Christen Mooney

Adventure, action and danger await 12 year old Brendan who must fight the Vikings and find a crystal that will help him complete the legendary Book of Kells.

Brendan is hard at work with his uncle Abbott Cellach (voiced by Brendan Gleeson) and other monks, helping to strengthen the abbey walls against the incoming Viking raids. A new life of adventure begins with the arrival of Brother Aidan, a celebrated master illuminator who initiates Brendan into the art of illumination, awakening his hidden but extraordinary talents.

In order to finish the magnificent book, Brendan has to overcome his deepest fears and embark on a quest into the enchanted forest. It is here that Brendan meets the mysterious fairy Aisling, a young wolf girl who becomes his closest friend and aids him on the quest. With the terrifying Viking hordes closing in, will Brendan succeed in his quest to illuminate the darkness, proving that enlightenment is the best fortification?

  • Audience Award at 2009 Edinburgh International Film Festival

As well as telling a fantasy adventure story set in an exciting period of Ireland’s history we endeavored to bring a taste of Irish culture and design to the screen and to deal with the importance of art and enlightenment even in challenging and difficult times. The visual style of the film is inspired by ancient Celtic Art and illuminated medieval manuscripts, including of course, the Book of Kells. Many of the locations are based on ancient Irish monuments.”Tomm Moore

“When it comes to distinctive and arresting animation, Tomm Moore and co-director Nora Twomey's debut is a visual feast.” – Eye for Film

“This is one of those rare films that truly deserves the label of 'instant classic' and marks its creator as a fierce and unique talent. Tomm Moore deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Michel Ocelot (Kirikou And The Sorceress), Sylvain Chomet (Triplets Of Belleville) and - yes - even Hayao Miyazaki!” - Twitch
